Library Technical Assistant: Circulation Specialist

Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri.  Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renown Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions.  Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region.

Summary: 

Supervise and maintain the circulation of the various collections.  This includes both in-house (Reserve and Reference) as well as collections in Library. Working knowledge of the nature and the functions of libraries. Assist patrons as needed in finding library materials and utilizing Library services.

Principal Duties: 

  • Enforcing Library circulation policies
  • Maintain the day-to-day functioning of circulation services including but not limited to:  set-up and closing, creating and updating patron records, explaining library policies and procedures, assisting patrons in locating books and information; while shelving materials as needed, charging and discharging materials and collecting, recording, distributing fines, fees and overdue notices
  • Proofreading patron records entered by others
  • Processing incoming materials and outgoing requests from other libraries

Education and Experience Requirements: 

  • Minimum of Associate’s degree in Library Science, English, Educational Studies or other related areas
  • Knowledge and interest of the daily library functions including non-electronic circulation practices
  • Customer service experience and Customer service etiquette
  • Ability to successfully use the Dewey Decimal System and/or Library of Congress Classification System
  • Ability to successfully use a subscription database such as Academic Search Elite and any other electronic library catalogs
  • Strong Organizational skills 

Other skills: 

  • Ability to work under pressure to meet short term goals while maintaining attention to detail as well as the ability to focus on tasks
  • Computer and software proficiency, including but not limited to: email, MS Office, the use of library software to input and retrieve data.
  • Patience, tact, and an ability to work with people in intense situations without escalating tension; work well with others in a highly diverse environment; Etiquette with co-workers as well as patrons
  • Strong organizational skills, as well as flexibility and willingness to learn new skills effectively, efficiently and enthusiastically

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to push heavy carts, lift boxes, reach high/ low shelves safely
  • Manual dexterity to use a computer keyboard
  • Ability to see and read small print on labels
