Executive Director of Urban Education and Engagement

Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri.  Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renown Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions.  Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region. 

 Summary:

Serves as the liaison between the Dean, students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders within community. Coordinates the development of the Center for Urban Education. This position will also be responsible for partnering with other campus programs to successfully implement and execute a comprehensive, coordinated student success/retention program for the diverse student population within the College of Education. This position will provide leadership towards the delivery of exceptional retention and community partnership efforts for the College of Education and Harris-Stowe State University, and assists with meeting recruitment, enrollment, academic success, and graduation objectives.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design and implement professional development on effective teaching and learning in urban schools.
  • Regularly collaborate with and advise on effective teaching, learning, and school operations.
  • Provide regular, ongoing coaching to stakeholders that results in immediate, measurable improvement in   effective school operations.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the College of Education to recruit and support students.
  • A day-to-day resource to the College of Education. Provide guidance, troubleshoot hurdles, and adapt as needed.
  • Regularly track, measure, and communicate educators’ growth and development to University partners, school leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage constituent partnerships with school leaders, teachers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to recognize great school leadership: Quickly identify the characteristics of successful school leaders that prepare students, particularly urban students, for success in college and career when you see it.
  • Identify learning opportunities: Whether watching how school leaders provide feedback to teachers, how students engage during a lesson, or looking at school performance data, identify whether school leaders are focused on the right variables to improve student learning in their unique contexts.
  • Manage policy changes: Laws, rules, and regulations that govern schools are ever-changing. Must be able to understand the implications of changes in public policy for school leaders, and help them adapt to these changes.
  • Track and analyze school, teachers and leader data, and identify new approaches to improve performance under a quick timeline.
  • Motivate and influence school leaders: Regularly partner with, and be expected to influence school leaders and their teachers by investing them in the vision for the College of Education continually improvement process that is disciplined by improvement science.
  • Translate expertise: Possess a strong public facilitation skill, ability to assess and adjust to the learning needs of the audience and ability to clearly communicate complex information to a variety of audiences (students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders).
  • Develops effective student support programs to increase retention and completion.
  • Responsible for enhancing the nonacademic student experience by supporting the design and implementation of co-curricular and extracurricular activities; promoting the Education Honors Society – Kappa Delta Pi, the College of Education Student Ambassadors and other Education Student Clubs; and supporting student logistics as needed.
  • Meets regularly with College of Education students to identify student needs, gather feedback, and disseminate information to maximize student satisfaction.
  • Benchmark competitors to identify student service best practices and implement new ideas to enhance the student experience.
  • Responsible for cultivating relationships between the College of Education and the divisions of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Enrollment Management.
  • Work in a collegial environment: Should be comfortable lending a hand, and not shy about asking for help.
  • Must have advanced computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe creative applications)
  • Coordinates the development of the Center for Urban Education within the College of Education.
  •  Other duties as assigned. 
Education & Experience Requirements:
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Doctorate Preferred
  • 3 Years minimum of leading an urban school and proven experience raising student achievement.
  • Deep knowledge of urban school leadership.
  • Previous experience with coaching and/or facilitating professional development for teachers and school leaders.
  • Previous experience with student success and retention.
  • Strong familiarity and experience with K-12 teaching and learning.
  • Understanding of what effective school leadership looks like.
  • A deep commitment to the importance of effective and rigorous instruction.
  • Proven ability to overcome barriers and provide seamless service to stakeholders.
  • Ability to track and analyze performance data to uncover trends and act strategically and effectively to improve results.
  • Ability to communicate direct feedback in a compelling way that inspires immediate improvements to instruction that will accelerate academic achievement.
  • A commitment to excellence in the field of education in a diverse environment in higher education.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years related work experience
Other Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of researched, evidenced-based best practices in the field of Urban Education.
  • Strong understanding of the pedagogies of University level teaching and learning, particularly for the first generation University students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing meaningful partnerships and maintaining effective relations with students and the University community.
