Instructor for Basic Conversational Spanish

Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri.  Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renown Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions.  Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region.

This one-credit hour introductory course is designed to enable the student to begin speaking and writing simple Spanish phrases as well as an understanding of the language.  Emphasis will be placed on the use of Spanish words and phrases in everyday interactions and conversational settings. The class will use a variety of strategies and materials to accommodate multiple learning styles. The student should possess a working knowledge of basic computer functions and applications. This role is a part-time contracted position and is expected to be filled for the Fall 2017 Term. This course will be on-campus on Thursdays from 4:00 PM - 4:50 PM

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engaging and student focused classroom instruction
  • Ability to differentiate instruction based on the instructional needs
  • Effective communication skills with students, faculty, and staff
  • Hold office hours in the Academic Resource Center (ARC)
  • Experience working with online course management systems and online homework management systems
  • Attend required Adjunct Faculty Institute and all scheduled department meetings
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of the Academic Resource Center
  • Ability to teach day or evening classes

EducationMust possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in education or related field.  Degree or certification in Spanish certification preferred but not required. Preference given to individuals with teaching experience at a community college or university in Spanish.

  • Ability to focus on results and to commit to excellence;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Elements:
  • Extended standing is required due to proctoring exams
  • May be susceptible to eyestrain, back discomfort, and hand/wrist problems due to long periods working on a computer;
  • Occasional stress may occur from volume and deadlines;
  • Demands normal manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity;
  • Must be mobile throughout the campus;
  • May be some walking, standing, bending or carrying light items.
