Graduate Student Intern, Career Engagement

Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant midtown St. Louis, Missouri. Job Title: Graduate Student Intern, Career Engagement 
Job Weekly Hours: 25 – 30 hours
Pay Rate: TBA
Work Cycle: June 4, 2018 - May 31, 2019
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Graduate Student Intern will serve as a career peer mentor in the Center for Career Engagement and Experiential Learning. The career peer mentor will provide career counseling, internship preparation, job search services, outreach and networking programs to students and alumni. The career peer will assist employers, assists with career services’ events; facilitate career workshops and market career services to students, alumni, faculty/staff. The career peer will also assist students with internships and graduates and alumni with career placement. The peer mentor will assist with creating an environment that is conducive for success through career coaching, interpersonal connections, soft skills development, resources, and referrals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Understand the role of support services in building lifelong skills and responsibility in students at the collegiate level;
  • Deliver career exploration and career planning services/programs to students and alumni;
  • Assist with the coordination of internships and job shadowing opportunities;
  • Provides presentations to student groups and classes on career development issues;
  • Assists in managing existing employers with questions and issues regarding recruiting students and alumni;
  • Assist with Annual Career and Graduate School Fair planning;
  • Assists with coordination of on-campus recruiting activities;
  • Critiques resumes and corresponds with students through career services management system;
  • Abide by FERPA policies as it relates to students’ education records;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Career Engagement.


  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Master’s degree program in Counseling, Student Affairs/Student Personnel, Higher Education or related field;
  • An interest in career counseling and advising;
  • An understanding of the role of academic and career counseling in higher education;
  • A working knowledge of the HBCU population and working with students with diverse populations including work with students from underrepresented ethnic/racial groups, first-generation, low-income, non-traditionally aged college students, and others;
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Strong organization skills, ability to multitask and remain a team player;
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills required;
  • An eager individual with the enthusiasm, creativity, and initiative;
  • Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel);
  • Building strong relationships and collaborate effectively;
  • Ability to work well independently.

Physical Requirements 

Successful candidates must have the ability to travel frequently from one site to another.  Should have adequate sight to engage in word processing, view screens, the ability to climb stairs, ability to sit for extended periods of time in meetings and observations, etc. Must be capable of lifting at least 15 pounds.
