Student Tutor (English, Math, Science, Foreign Language), Upward Bound

Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri.  Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the renowned Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions.  Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region.

Job Title: Student Tutor – (English, Math, Science, Foreign Language)
Job Weekly Hours: At least 4 hours
Pay Rate: $10.00
Work Cycle: Immediately - June 15, 2018; and June 25, 2018 - August 10, 2018
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Upward Bound Program would like to offer the students of Harris-Stowe State University vital career and network building opportunities through its Student Tutoring Program. This paid program is from March - June, and June until August of 2018. We are searching of students that are capable of tutoring high school students in English (Language/ Literature), Math (Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and/or Foreign Language (French, Spanish). 

Successful candidates will have strong communication and tutoring skills. This program is conducted on campus and open to currently enrolled students in good standing with the University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Tutors are responsible for the attitudes and behavior of students in their room/study area. They are responsible for keeping students focused and productive in their study area during study hours.Tutors may work with students individually or in groups. They are responsible for initiating contact with students especially if students do not ask for assistance.  
  • Tutors are responsible for following-up on student’s tutorials.
  • Tutors are responsible for maintaining daily written tutorial contact logs of services provided to students at the study center.  
  • Logs must be completed after each tutorial session of each tutorial day.
  • Tutors may refer any student to the Counselor for conferences.
  • With approval from program administrative staff, tutors may organize a conference/call with parents of students regarding the student’s academic needs.
  • Tutors are required to discuss with Counselors, students’ grades of “C” or below in academic subjects.
  • Tutors may bring additional academic materials to supplement student’s own textbooks, homework, etc. 

Requirements

  • Must be in good standing with the University; Academically, Socially and Financially:
    • Any student placed on academic probation or social probation does not qualify to participate in the program. The student may reapply to the program once the probation is removed.
    • Students must be in good financial standing with the university, and maintain their HSSU Bursar account throughout their employment as a student employee.
  • Students must be “unconditionally” admitted to the university in their degree-specific internship course the semester the paid internship is awarded if they are seeking credit for the internship.
  • Students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Students with tutoring experience; preferred

  • Currently enrolled at Harris-Stowe State University with a 3.5 GPA
